Rudy Project PPE Glasses
Rudy Project PPE Glasses

I’ve worn Rudy project glasses for sports for years. They make some great wrap around lenses for biking that are fog free and durable. I was really excited to see that they’ve started making these very nice PPE lenses. These have been growing in popularity with Emergency Medicine Physicians - and for good reason. They have great clarity and good coverage of your eyes.

Distil Union Minimalist Wallet
Distil Union Minimalist Wallet

I’ve been carrying this wallet for about two years now, and it’s the best wallet I’ve ever used. It carries ID and primary card on one side and other cards in the other side. It’s got a very clever money clip in the center and it virtually disappears into my front pocket. It holds the cards very securely and not a single stich is out of place after all of these days. It’s a fantastic wallet!

My Ambulance Education
My Ambulance Education

This books is a graphic portrayal of the life of an EMT. From dealing with a body that is frozen solid and trapped under a front porch to climbing into the burned-out wreck of a car to treat the seriously injured driver, Clark’s stories are horrifying, poignant, touching and often filled with the dark humor that is so characteristic of the people who work under extreme stress.

This would be an interesting book for the partner or family of a paramedic or EMT to read. The book goes beyond episodic stories and instead tells a cohesive story being a first responder. It’s a great peak into the life of the job in a big city.

3M Scotchlite Black Reflective Striping Tape
3M Scotchlite Black Reflective Striping Tape

This is black reflective tape. I originally purchased this for my motorcycle. I added some stripes of it to my pannier bags and along the bottom edge of my helmet. A couple of strips live along the front fender as well. This tape is black, durable, and stealthy. However, it lights up brilliantly at night. I’ve found this to be really useful addition to my toolbox. I’ve added it to the edges of my mailbox, and I’ve added strips to my sea kayak paddles. My commuter bike for tooling around town has it around my seat-post and on the black handlebars. It’s almost completely unnoticeable during the day and is quite bright at night. If you order a roll of it, you’ll be surprised at how useful it will be.

Caseling Hard Case for Stethoscope
Caseling Hard Case for Stethoscope

Stethoscope case has an accessory pocket

My wife recently worked in Hawaii for a month, and I watched in horror as she tossed her Littmann Cardiology stethoscope into her carry-on bag without any protection. I combed through the reviews and found this case from Caseling for her.

This is a great little case that will comfortably fit a stethoscope and a few small accessories. When you place your stethoscope into it, just remember to make the largest loops with the tubing that you can. You want to make sure that your tubing stays kink free and as uncompressed as possible.

CRKT Drifter Serrated Edge Knife
CRKT Drifter Serrated Edge Knife

This is my new favorite everyday carry knife. I’ve been carrying this knife for a couple of months now, and it’s fantastic. It’s reasonably priced, and is made from good steel. It sharpens well, and I like having a serrated edge - I find it useful for cutting cord in particular.

The knife is very practical - it opens with either hand, and it’s slim enough that it fits well in my pocket. It’s cheap enough that if I were to lose it, I wouldn’t lose sleep over it. It’s a little tricky to close with one hand, but I don’t find it to be troublesome.

At this price point, I don’t think this knife can be beaten. It’ll be a trusty tool for the job.

The NuMask Pocket CPR Mask
The NuMask Pocket CPR Mask

The National Ski Patrol has recently starting recommending this new mask design for ski patrollers.

Unlike a traditional mask, this acts like a SCUBA or snorkel mouthpiece and uses the patients lips to seal the mask. The nose is them held shut with a modified CE grip. You can check out the training materials to learn more.

Perhaps the most interesting part of this new mask is that it comes with a soft OPA. The provider trims the OPA to length with shears and inserts it. The OPA actually indexes into the mouthpiece and helps form a seal.

This is a really interesting approach. I’ve used mine in training, and after getting used to inserting it, there’s no blow-by and the system seems really solid. In addition, the carrying case is small. I’ve stashed a few of them in various personal packs of mine.

Victorinox Belt Clip - Perfect for Keys!
Victorinox Belt Clip - Perfect for Keys!

This is a great little belt clip - it’ll hold a keychain and it won’t damage your belt.

Expect this to become a part of your everyday carry, it’s a great way to keep a keychain handy, without it digging into your hip. The clip action is firm, but might not be great with a really thick key ring. But it’ll certainly work with 99% of the key rings I’ve seen.

CMS 50-DL Pulse Oximeter
CMS 50-DL Pulse Oximeter

First, this simple pulse oximeter is not rated for medical use. However, it’s accurate and a perfect addition to a personal equipment kit. I keep one in my ski patrol kit. It’s lightweight, and as long as fingers are reasonably warm, it’s a great baseline starting point.

Toss it in an emergency personal kit, and have a great little Pulse-ox meter with you whenever you need it!

XStat® device for the treatment of gunshot and shrapnel wounds
XStat® device for the treatment of gunshot and shrapnel wounds

This looks to be a interesting product. The FDA has recently approved the XStat device for traumatic and penetrating wounds. The device appears to be particularly useful in treating deep gashes that are difficult to manage with a tourniquet.

The device has been cleared for use in severe hemorrhagic shock and non-compressible junctional wounds. It contains a collection of small sponges that act as a temporary barrier to blood flow. Each applicator can absorb up to a pint of blood.

This looks to be a promising new tool. Read more at the manufacturer website.
